Pro hockey in Utah started with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, who played their first game in 1969 at the old Salt Palace and later at the Maverik Center. For 25 seasons, the Golden Eagles were Utah's only professional sports team, bouncing through three different leagues — the Western Hockey League, the Central Hockey League, and the International Hockey League — as minor pro hockey reorganized around them.
The Golden Eagles weren't just around, they were good. The franchise picked up three Adams Cup championships in the CHL and two Turner Cup championships in the IHL before finally being sold and relocated to Auburn Hills, Michigan in 1994.
Utah went one season without pro hockey after the Golden Eagles left, then got a new team almost immediately: the reigning Turner Cup champion Denver Grizzlies relocated to the Delta Center for the 1995–96 season as the Utah Grizzlies. The clinching game is the detail worth remembering: 17,381 fans packed the Delta Center to watch it, which was, at the time, the largest single-game attendance figure in minor-league hockey history. The NHL officially landed in Utah in April 2024, when the league's board of governors unanimously approved a $1.2 billion sale that relocated the Arizona Coyotes to Salt Lake City.
