About the Utah Glizzies: Utah's Hot-Dog-Themed Beer League Team

Every beer league has a team that takes it a little less seriously and has a lot more fun. In Sandy, Utah, that team is the Utah Glizzies — a hot-dog-themed adult rec hockey club that plays real games, keeps real stats, and has somehow turned "glizzy" (internet slang for a hot dog) into an entire identity. If you've stumbled onto us and thought, "wait, who are these guys," this is the whole story: where we play, how we got the name, how we actually do on the ice, and how you can end up on the bench next to us.

The Short Version

The Glizzies are an adult beer league hockey team based in Sandy, Utah. We skate out of the Utah Mammoth Ice Center at 10450 S. State Street — yes, the same practice facility the NHL's Utah Mammoth use, no, not the Delta Center. We are open to all skill levels, we take the hot dog very seriously and ourselves not at all, and our entire brand runs on what we lovingly call elite glizzy energy.

Why "Glizzies"?

Because a hockey team name should make you laugh before the puck even drops. "Glizzy" is slang for a hot dog, and once that idea got floated in a group chat, there was no going back. Instead of a mascot with claws and attitude, we got a tube of processed meat and infinite jokes. The whole aesthetic followed: gold-and-green sweaters, a logo you'd put on a food truck, and player nameplates that read like a deli menu — MEAT SHIELD in net, SAUCE DAWG running the offense, GlizzNasty burying game-winners. It's dumb in the best possible way, and that's exactly the point.

We're proof that a team can be a genuine punchline and still show up 3-0-0. The bit and the ball don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Yes, We Actually Play (And We're Not Bad)

Here's the twist people don't expect: under the hot-dog costume, the Glizzies can play. Last season was the breakout — we ran the table into the championship game before losing a heartbreaker 6-5 in overtime to the Salty Boys on July 3. Sixty-eight goals for, a plus-17 differential, and the first trophy-game appearance in team history. It stung. It also made the group hungrier.

Fall 2026 opened with a statement: a shutout of the Salt Shakers, a 5-3 "receipts" win over the Gnarwhalers, and a 10-0 demolition of the Zombonis behind a full-team effort. Three down, eight to go on the regular-season slate at Mammoth Ice Center. New nameplates, a returning core, and the same sacred crease.

Where the Glizzies Fit in Utah's Hockey Boom

We didn't appear in a vacuum. Utah went from a hockey afterthought to a genuine hockey state almost overnight when the NHL arrived — and the rec scene exploded right alongside it. We wrote about that whole chain reaction in how the Utah Mammoth turned Utah into a hockey state, and it's the reason a team like ours exists at all. When thousands of new fans fall in love with watching hockey, a chunk of them go looking for a way to actually play. Beer league is that on-ramp, and the Glizzies are one very silly, very welcoming lane of it.

If you want the nuts and bolts of our building — parking, open skate, adult league sign-up — we broke that down in our beer leaguer's guide to the Utah Mammoth Ice Center. And if you're curious what a locker room like ours is really made of, our 10 types of guys in every beer league locker room is basically a scouting report on our own bench.

Who Can Join?

Short answer: probably you. The Glizzies are built for adults who want to play hockey and have a good time doing it, whether you grew up on a pond in Manitoba or laced up for the first time last month. We've got former junior players and guys whose official stat line "reads like a very peaceful evening." Both belong.

We laid out the full path from "I've never skated" to "I'm on a roster" in our step-by-step guide to joining a beer league in Utah.

The Mission, Such As It Is

The Glizzies exist to prove a simple thing: beer league hockey is one of the best hobbies an adult can have, and it's a whole lot better when you don't take yourself too seriously. We'll keep grilling opponents, handing out legendary nameplates, and chasing that OT championship we let slip away. Utah's hockey story is still being written — from the NHL all the way down to a hot-dog team in Sandy. Come be a chapter of it.
